Kurt Cobain's Skateboard en Tony Hawk voor Mentale Gezondheid

Het skateboard is een zogenaamd SIMS model uit 1985, ontworpen door skateboarder Jeff Phillips. Op het deck heeft Cobain de albumhoes van Iron Maiden's Killers overgeschilderd. Cobain en Phillips maakten allebei op dezelfde manier een einde aan hun leven. Kurt in april 1994, en Jeff een paar maanden eerder, december 1993. 

TONY HAWK

Omdat Cobain en Phillips allebei kempten met mentale gezondheidsproblemen komt skateboarder Tony Hawk in actie. Hij heeft het board in 2022 gekocht op een veiling. Het is voor Hawk, naast de skateboard-link, ook een familie aangelegenheid. De zoon van Hawk heeft namelijk een relatie met de Francis Cobain, de dochter dan Kurt. 

Hawk zegt op Instagram:

I bought this skateboard at an auction last year. It is an original Jeff Phillips model, hand painted by Kurt Cobain in 1985. Two icons that had immense influence on their respective fields, both of whom passed away tragically and much too young. I even tracked down the original owner to understand its provenance. With the incomparable help of dupedupe, we are hoping to make something good of this acquisition by raising awareness for emotional health, and to help provide resources for those who are struggling mentally. Op de dag dat Kurt Cobain 56 had geworden maakte Tony Hawk zijn plannen bekend. Replica's van het board, dus inclusief het ontwerp van Jeff Phillips, en een print van de Cobain-beschildering komen officieel op de markt. Aan de bovenkant van het board heeft Hawk de handtekeningen van Kurt en Jeff toegevoegd. De opbrengst wordt verdeeld tussen mentale gezondheidscentrum The Jed Foundation en The Skatepark Project. 

Hawk legt uit:

"In order to better understand the provenance of this “unicorn” skateboard that I acquired last year, I went to Seattle to get the story directly from Cameron Ross (the original owner). With inspiration from @thespacewitch and the help of @dupedupe, we are offering a photorealistic version of this deck in the form of actual skateboards, prints and stickers. We kept it real with the original Phillips shape and OG truck-holes, and added KC & JP signatures on the top graphic. All proceeds from these sales will be equally split between the Jed Foundation and The Skatepark Project in order to provide resources for those struggling with mental health, and to create more public skateparks in underserved areas.
