Sam Fender over zijn debuutalbum: “The first three songs are my favourites”.

Vrijdag 13 september komt eindelijk het debuutalbum van Sam Fender, Hypersonic Missiles, uit. Het album liet langer op zich wachten dan eerst gepland. Door stemproblemen moest Sam afgelopen zomer een aantal festivaloptredens afzeggen, en verschoof de release van zijn album een maand. Maar nu is het eindelijk zover: Hypersonic Missiles is voor iedereen te beluisteren.

“I love the saxophone!”

Het album telt dertien tracks, waarvan we er zeven al kenden. Als laatste werd 'The Borders' uitgebracht wat veel mensen doet denken aan The War On Drugs - alhoewel de inspiratie van Bruce Springsteen ook duidelijk te horen is. Officieel mag je natuurlijk niet spreken van favorieten op je eigen album, maar Sam doet het toch. Al kiest hij er meerdere: “Probably Hypersonic… Well, the first three tracks are my favourites I think.”

Zowel in 'The Borders' als in de titeldragende 'Hypersonic Missiles' komt een instrument voor wat steeds vaker terug te horen is in nieuwe muziek, de saxofoon. Sam: “I love saxophone and I was dying to get a bit of saxophone on the record.”

"Don't wanna hear about Brexit, them old cunts fucked up our exit"

Zoals we misschien al wisten van de tracks die voor het album uitkwamen (zoals 'Dead Boys' en 'Hypersonic Missiles') schrijft Sam ook vaak over de huidige maatschappij en wereld waar we in leven. Sam: “The world is in a pivotal moment right now. Like with climate change, if we don’t clamp down on that the world is gonna go into an unstoppable chain reaction in ten years time. And then there’s Brexit, then there’s Donald Trump… Donald Trump a man who denies the very existence of climate change!”

Daarom gaat 'Hypersonic Missiles' in feite over het einde van de wereld. Het is wat absurdistisch, met thema’s van de koude oorlog in plaats van onze maatschappij, maar het idee is hetzelfde: “The whole point of the song is we’ve gotta make some big changes. We are on the brink of disaster, on the brink of the end of mankind. That might be okay for all these old pricks who don’t give a shit about climate change, because they’ll be dead. But we’re gonna have to do something about it sooner or later cause I actually want my grandkids to exist in a world that’s still there for them.”

Dat Sam nadenkt over de wereld waar hij in leeft hoor je ook in de derde track op het album, een stand-out van alle nummers die we nog niet hadden gehoord, 'White Privilege'. Hij zingt:

"A classic debut album: An eclectic mix of songs"

Maar, op het album staan niet alleen maar zware maatschappelijk kritische songs. Het War On Drugs/roadtrip gevoel dat eerder in 'The Borders' werd opgeroepen voel je opnieuw bij 'You’re Not The Only One'. Sam vat het samen als volgt: “It’s a very eclectic sort of mixed album, it’s a classic debut in the sense that there’s not just one theme running through it, it’s got lots of different flavors, loads of different things going on.”
