Live & Puur is een passie voor lekkere herrie. Een samenkomst van vrienden (Jelle, Hanne en Roel) die iets doen wat ze tof vinden; een radioshow maken die net even buiten de lijntjes kleurt. Wie ooit bij ons in de uitzending is geweest of heeft geluisterd, weet dat het een heerlijk georganiseerde chaos is waar we met name underground en alternatieve muziek uit de Lage Landen een podium bieden. Dit doen we letterlijk en figuurlijk. Elke week nodigen we een toffe band uit om bij ons in de huiskamer langs te komen en onze stage en microfoons onveilig te maken. Is er nou een keertje geen band? Deze week: D.O.A.
Een gesprek met D.O.A. voer je niet; je wordt er middenin gegooid. Afgelopen zomer op een regenachtige middag, zat Hanne tegenover Joey “Shithead” Keithley zat. Terwijl de regen tegen het venster sloeg, zat daar de man die hardcore niet alleen hielp vormen, maar het überhaupt een naam gaf. Een levende vuist in de lucht, nog steeds scherp, luid en koppig eerlijk.
D.O.A. is punk zoals punk bedoeld is: geen franje, geen façade, geen verontschuldiging. Sinds 1978 trekt de band een spoor van herrie, verzet en do-it-yourself-mentaliteit door de wereld. Ze waren al anti-globalisme en anti-ongelijkheid voordat er hashtags bestonden. Ze stonden op voor vrijheid van meningsuiting lang voordat dat een marketingterm werd. Talk Minus Action Equals Zero is geen slogan. Het is hun ruggengraat.
En toch: tussen de politieke explosieven en de gortdroge humor zit ook iets anders. In dat gesprek met Hanne klonk de kern van D.O.A.: een band die al decennia weigert om cynisch te worden. Die nog steeds gelooft dat muziek iets kan openbreken, opstoken, wakker schudden. Joey praat zoals hij speelt: direct, fel, zonder seconde te verspillen. Maar ook met de grijns van iemand die al veertig jaar bewezen heeft dat je geen multinational of gigantische productie nodig hebt om de boel op te schudden; slechts een gitaar, een mening en een podium dat het houdt.
D.O.A. is een reminder dat punk niet nostalgisch hoeft te zijn. Het leeft, het schuurt, het botst. En op die natgeregende middag liet Joey zien waarom zij nog steeds relevant zijn: omdat ze weigeren stil te staan. Omdat ze blijven duwen. Omdat de wereld nog lang niet klaar is.
D.O.A. blijft relevant omdat ze weigeren te verstillen. Ze maken herrie met een doel. En zolang er ongelijkheid, bullshit en onrecht zijn, blijft die herrie broodnodig.

You don’t conduct a conversation with D.O.A.; you get thrown straight into it. Last summer, on a rainy afternoon, Hanne found herself across from Joey “Shithead” Keithley. While the rain hammered against the window, there sat the man who didn’t just help shape hardcore; he gave it a name. A living fist in the air, still sharp, loud and stubbornly honest.
D.O.A. is punk the way punk was meant to be: no frills, no façade, no apologies. Since 1978, the band has cut a trail of noise, resistance and do-it-yourself mentality across the world. They were anti-globalization and anti-inequality before hashtags existed. They stood up for free speech long before it became a marketing term. Talk Minus Action Equals Zero isn’t a slogan. It’s their backbone.
And yet, between the political fireballs and the bone-dry humor, there’s something more. In that conversation with Hanne, the core of D.O.A. came through: a band that, after decades, still refuses to grow cynical. A band that still believes music can crack something open, stir things up, shake people awake. Joey talks the way he plays: direct, fierce, wasting no time. But also with the grin of someone who’s spent forty years proving you don’t need a multinational or massive production to shake the place up: just a guitar, an opinion, and a stage that won’t collapse.
D.O.A. is a reminder that punk doesn’t have to be nostalgic. It lives, it scrapes, it collides. And on that rain-soaked afternoon, Joey showed why they’re still relevant: because they refuse to stand still. Because they keep pushing. Because the world is far from done.
D.O.A. remains relevant because they refuse to go quiet. They make noise with purpose. And as long as inequality, bullshit and injustice exist, that noise is nothing but necessary.
