Taylor Momsen over nieuw album: "Het voelt als de meest authentieke plaat die we ooit hebben gemaakt"

Hoewel The Pretty Reckless inmiddels al zeventien jaar bestaat, blijft de basis voor Momsen onveranderd. "To me, my favorite thing is writing songs. That's everything. Without that, I don't really know who I'd be." Ook het leven op tour blijft bijzonder. "Getting to travel and play music with my best friends is just the greatest thing ever."

Brutaal eerlijk

Met Dear God is de spanning voor de release inmiddels verdwenen. Volgens Momsen heeft ze het album zelf al vaak genoeg bekritiseerd. "I'm the harshest critic, so it's mostly just excitement. This album in particular, it's my favorite record we've ever made. It just feels like me in the most authentic way. There's a brutal honesty to it. It's ripped almost directly from my diary."

Donkere boodschap

Een van de nummers die de band al speelt is When I Wake Up. Op het eerste gehoor klinkt het als een energieke rocksong, maar volgens Momsen schuilt er een veel zwaardere boodschap achter. "I went through a very challenging period of my life where we went through a lot of loss and a lot of very difficult things. Let's just say I didn't handle it well. There was a time where I was very off the rails and very out of control. That song is kind of ripped from that."

Juist daarom is de boodschap van het nummer belangrijk. "The party lifestyle takes its toll. It's an unsustainable lifestyle. Eventually you've got to wake up from that."

Soundgarden

De grunge-invloeden op Dear God zijn duidelijk hoorbaar, maar volgens Momsen zijn die er altijd al geweest. "My two pillars of music are The Beatles and Soundgarden. The first band I fell in love with was The Beatles, and then I discovered Soundgarden, and it changed my entire life."

Een favoriet Soundgarden-nummer kiezen lukt haar dan ook niet. Wel draait één album de laatste tijd overuren. "Right now, Down on the Upside is all I care about. It's all I'm listening to, to the point of driving my band insane."

Eén grote biecht

Volgens Momsen komt Dear God pas echt tot zijn recht als je het van begin tot eind luistert. "It's essentially one giant confession of my life. It's one giant letter to God." Daarom koos de band er bewust voor om de singles in dezelfde volgorde uit te brengen als waarop ze op het album staan. "What you've heard right now is giving you the correct flow, and the story will just continue."

En wat Pinkpop later die middag van The Pretty Reckless kon verwachten? Momsen hield het kort: "To be loud and fucking wild."
